Latin Name: Acer Saccharum
Characteristics of the Tree: It can grow to a moderate size of 70m (90ft) in height and reach a diameter of 750mm (2ft 6in).
Characteristics of the Wood: The heavy wood is hard wearing, straight grain and fine texture. The heartwood is light reddish-brown, while the sapwood is often selected for its qualities of whiteness.
Common Uses: Furniture, cabinetry, flooring, turnery, musical instruments, butcher’s blocks and veneer.
Workability: The wood is difficult to work with hand and machine tools, particularly if irregularly grained. It accepts glues well.
Finishing: It accepts stain well and can be polished to a fine finish.
Average Dry Weight: 740kg/m3 (46lb/ft3)
