Common Name: Red Oak
Latin Name: Quercus Rubra
Characteristics of the Tree: Depending on the growing conditions, it can reach a height of 21m (70ft) and a diameter of 1m (3ft 3in).
Characteristics of the Wood: The wood has straight grain and a course texture, though this can vary according to the rate of growth. Cutting technique allow rays to be exposed “flecks” on quartered surface of boards. Rift does not contain “flecks” but is straight grained. Northern wood is not as course as that from trees grown in southern states, which are fast grown. The color can range light tan to pinkish-red. It is good for steam bending.
Common Uses: Furniture, cabinetry, flooring, millwork, and decorative veneer.
Workability: It can be worked readily with hand and machine tools. It accepts glues well.
Finishing: It accepts stain well and can be polished to a fine finish.
Average Dry Weight: 790kg/m3 (49lb/ft3)
