PIKE NEWS

Quality, Service, & Forest Stewardship for Over 100 years!

When a forest gets too crowded, sunlight is the limiting growth factor for most trees. To improve forest health and vitality, a selective harvest is used to make sure valuable sunlight is being utilized to grow good trees. Canopy gaps, are created after mature, over-mature, diseased or damaged trees are harvested.

We don’t want the sunlight being used to grow unhealthy trees. We want the sunlight to be used by healthy, young, “crop” trees. Crop trees are identified for their future economic or wildlife value, and released through harvesting of neighboring trees. Trees around the edge of an opening now have more sunlight to grow. Pike foresters are happy to make periodic assessments appropriate to thin your woods and keep it growing well.
