Common Name: Sassafras
Latin Name: Sassafras Albidum
Characteristics of the Tree: This tree can reach a height of 42m (78ft) with a 1.5m (5ft) diameter trunk in ideal growing locations.
Characteristics of the Wood: It has a course open grain, is relatively light weight and has a pleasant smell when machining. The thin sapwood is pale tan while the heartwood runs from light to medium tan.
Common Uses: Furniture, cabinetry, paneling, millwork
Workability: Can be worked with easily with hand and machine tools. It accepts glues well.
Finishing: It stains well and can be polished to a good finish.
Average Dry Weight: 520kg/m3 (32lb/ft3)
